When I finally write for ✨fun✨
I will scribble with glee
ideas won’t scare me
unfinished work won’t eat at my soul
When I finally write for fun
it will be because I’ve learned
BOTH ARE GOOD
the ebb & flow
the work & the rest
the push and let go
the discipline and the whimsy
I will befriend my hunger
a sign of life
of fight
of wanting more
AND
I will fight for contentment
delight
joy
in my current reality
I will preach it to others and mostly myself
Until I believe it. Until I live it.
BOTH ARE GOOD
I can and I don’t have to.

If you’re a writer or other creative, I’d love to know what it looks like when you’re enjoying your craft. If you don’t consider yourself a creative, what is an activity or task you’d like to have fun with again? What might that look like?

The idea behind this poem came from Jillian Stacia’s post, When I finally believe my body is good. Please check her out; her poems are 🔥.
Looking for feedback!
The phrases “Both are good” and “I can and I don’t have to” have been ideas that I’ve been mulling over and learning to believe for the past couple years. I wrote in more depth on these phrases in my past newsletter, Grace-filled Growth (which merged into this Substack.) You can read the essays here: “Both are good” and “I can and I don’t have to.” Please take a look at those posts and let me know if you’d like me to revive a monthly Grace-filled Growth series with stories, links, and challenges for grace and growth.
Best,
Aly
Yes!!
Aly I love how you played with tension in this poem. It’s beautiful! I’m so proud of you for wrestling through the challenges of “both are good” and “I can and I don’t have to.”
